NEV BOYS: Late Flurry Lifts Henderson, 22-16
Read article about one of our high school lacrosse teams and their win against Cenntenial Bulldogs.
Despite a number of challenges encountered in the first four games, the Henderson Cougars emerged from pool play undefeated. The scores were 13 – 4 vs. Bishop Kelly (ID); 5 – 3 vs. Judge Memorial (UT); 5 – 1 vs. Olympus (UT); and 14 – 7 vs. Green Valley (NV). The Cougars entered the quarterfinals versus Jordan (UT). Long stick midfielder started the scoring against Jordan, however the challengers rallied and the game was knotted at four to four at halftime. Henderson goalie Ben Tourek shut the door in the second half holding Jordan without a single second half tally; recording a total of eight saves over the course of the game, and Henderson pulled away to a 10 – 4 final. On offense, the cougars were paced by Kieran Eissler (4g; 1a) and Miles Mercer (2g; 1a).
Advancing to the semifinals, the cougars found an old rival in the Palo Verde (NV) Panthers. Palo took the initial fight to the Cougars and at the half, the Panthers had a 5 – 3 lead. However, once again the Cougars proved that they were up to the challenge in front of them. With ninety seconds remaining in the game, the Cougars had built a single goal lead at 7 to 6. At this point, Jimmy Bivans took the ball for Palo Verde on the wing, drove to the left and found the back of the net for the panthers to send the game to overtime. The first overtime did not produce a victor, and the game went into the second extra period. With both teams having multiple opportunities, the game went back and forth with both teams having multiple chances. Tourek once again kept the Cougars in the game—he recorded eight saves in the overtime period (14 total saves). With less than a minute left in the second overtime, Eissler drove with the ball and found a wide open Brandon Knudson on the crease for the game winner. Palo Verde was led by Austin Collins (3g) while Henderson had Brandon Knudson (3g) leading the way with Jet Harding and Kieran Eissler (each 2g; 1a) providing significant contributions.
Advancing to the Finals, the Cougars found another rival in the Centennial (NV) Bulldogs. In 2010, the Bulldogs knocked Henderson out of the Nevada State playoffs in the semifinals. This game would go back and forth the entire game with each team building leads of up to two goals only to have the other rally. With forty-five seconds remaining, the Cougars found themselves leading 7 to 6, but man down. Blake Krowicki would step up for the Bulldogs. After a couple of quick passes, he fired a laser past Tourek to tie the game and send this game to overtime. Once again neither team would find the game winner in the first overtime. In the second overtime, the Cougars had multiple man-up opportunities that would prove unsuccessful. Tyler Zaffuto and Michael Morse spearheaded the defensive effort for Centennial. With two minutes remaining in the second overtime, Knudson would once again be the hero. Against a short stick defender from x, he drove right drawing the defense, and then rolled back to the left where there was no defensive help and deposited the championship goal. Centennial leading scorer was Krowicki (3g) while Henderson had Eissler (2g, 2a) and Mercer (3g) as their top contributors. Tourek (7saves) split halves with Hunter Hutchensson (5saves) in the final, and based upon his solid goaltending over the course of the game was named tournament MVP.
Results:
Sat Feb 26th @ Brophy Prep (AZ) L (4-9)
After a long early morning bus ride down to Phoenix; the cougars got out to a hot start building a 3-2 halftime lead. In the third quarter, the Brophy Prep Broncos had rallied and held a 5-3 lead. The cougars put in the first goal to close the gap to 4-5, however an ensuing three minute illegal stick penalty negated that goal, and Brophy capitalized on the extra man opportunity scoring three goals and pushing the lead to 8-3. From there the Cougars lost their composure and did not have the fortitude to answer the challenge. A final of 4 to 9 was a disappointing result and in the coaching staff’s minds, not indicative of the team’s full ability.

Sun Feb 27th @ Chaparral (AZ) W (12-3)
The next day, the Cougars were eager to atone for their opening game loss. Paced by Danny Goldhammer’s first career hat-trick, Sebastian Frago’s dominance at the faceoff X, and Alex Flores leading the defense with some aggressive physical slides to ball, the Cougars controlled the day and all aspects of the game to post their first victory on the season 12 – 3 over the Chaparral Firebirds.

Mon Feb 28th @Desert Vista (AZ) W (14 – 13)
The Cougars came out to a very sluggish start. After two minutes they found themselves in a 3-0 deficit and that gap widened to 5-1 at the end of the first quarter. The Desert Vista Thunder used domination at the faceoff X and a very capable transition offense to build this lead. Over the next twenty one minutes of game time; the Cougars would answer the challenge. Lead by Brandon Knudson (7 goals) the Cougars would establish their first lead of the day at 10 – 9 with three minutes to play in the third quarter. However, once again complacency got the better of the Cougars and Desert Vista put four quick goals in the back of the net to take a 13 – 10 lead into the fourth quarter. However, on this day, the Cougars would not be denied. Goaltender Ben Tourek held the Thunder scoreless in the fourth quarter and Knudson continued ripping long range shots past the Desert Vista goaltender. With three minutes remaining, the Cougars evened the score at thirteen. At 2:35 remaining in the game the Cougars wrestled possession away from the Thunder and called their last timeout to regroup. After working for a good opportunity, Miles Mercer took a pass, dodged around his defender and found the back of the net on a high-to-low shot to stake the Cougars to the narrowest of leads with ninety-four seconds remaining. Sebastian Frago would win the ensuing face-off and despite two turnovers, a ferocious ride would ensure that Desert Vista would not have the opportunity to score the equalizer and force overtime. The final of 14 – 13 in favor of the good guys ensured the long bus ride home would be much more enjoyable.
