Cougar Coaches

logoCougar Facts: All of our coaches are volunteers-giving up to 500 hours of time a year to the Cougars. There is no reimbursement or monetary reward. Our coaches have played college lacrosse and were very successful; they have lots of coaching experience. They also have busy careers. These guys coach because they love the game and want to pass along their skills to our kids. Thanks Coaches!

Cougar Head Coach - Paul Parasugo

Coach Parasugo grew up in New Jersey and began playing lacrosse in the 5th grade. He graduated from West Morris Medham High School and helped them win the 1994 state lacrosse championship (he played attack). He played four years of college lacrosse at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign at attack, midfield, and long-stick midfielder. In his senior year, Paul set the single season scoring record. When he wasn't playing lacrosse, he earned a degree in chemistry. After that, Paul turned to coaching and was the assistant coach for the University of Illinois' team for three years and then became the head coach. He left the Illini with a winning record as a coach and then spent two years in Chicago. Currently, Paul is employed by Molycorp Mining LLC at a rare earth pit mine on the Nevada/California boarder--50 miles outside of town on I-15. His current job functions include analytical chemistry, process development for mining/extracting/purifying, as well as patent development into marketable goods. He has been working with the Cougars for four years and we are lucky to have him.

Carl Chappell

Coach Carl is in his second season with the Cougars.  He grew up in Missouri and began playing lacrosse his junior year at Oklahoma State University.  During his time on the team, OSU belonged to the Great Plains Lacrosse League, but with his and his teammates help has since moved to the Lone Star Alliance Division of the MCLA.  He played midfielder and was the main face-off person during his time at OSU.  He played two years of club lacrosse at OSU and graduated with a degree in fire protection and safety.  Upon graduation, Carl moved to Kansas City and played men’s lacrosse for two years before moving to Las Vegas.  While in Kansas City, he helped coach middle-school age kids in informal practices and camps.  Carl is employed by Rolf Jensen & Associates, Inc. in their Las Vegas office.  His current job functions include plan reviews, development of fire protection approaches for facilities and construction administration of those approaches

Joseph Petrelli

Coach Petrelli started playing Lacrosse for Mt. Carmel high school in San Diego during his sophomore year.  He played midfield his first year and switched to attack during his Junior and Senior seasons.  He was the teams offensive MVP both years.  After high school, he played MDCLA for Sonoma State University in Northern California during the 2001, 2002 & 2003 seasons.  In 2002 the team went undefeated in the first division and won the MDCLA National Championship.  During his senior year, Joseph switched careers and became the  head varsity coach at Rancho Cotati High School, right next to campus.  Rancho went 9-3 during Joe's tenure.  Coach Joe graduated from SSU in 2004 with a BA in History and  is currently working on an M.Ed/Teaching Credential at UNLV.  Our coach will be student teaching at Del Webb Middle School this spring.  This is Coach Petrelli's first season with the Cougars and we are lucky to have him!

Dave Libby

Dave Libby started playing lacrosse at Mt Vernon HS in Virginia his sophomore year. He played long-pole defense for the Majors for 3 years. His Freshmen year in college he played for Mary Washington College, VA. He then transferred out to UNLV, bringing his equipment and sticks with him. Unsuccessfully he tried to start a team at UNLV. After graduation he helped start the Las Vegas Lacrosse League. Initially coaching Centennial HS, the drive was too long so he started the Coronado Cougar program in 2002. That same year he helped found the Sin City men’s team.

The next year he moved down to San Diego and played for the San Diego Men’s club team while helping out Chula Vista HS.

Coach Libby moved back to Las Vegas in 2006 and started to help out the Cougars again as well as helping out Del Webb MS. His full attention was needed at Del Webb so he became head coach. That season they went 4-8, a big step from the previous 0-12 team.
The following two years the team went 9-1. And won the Silver Cup Trophy twice.

Last year Coach Libby returned to the HS rank, becoming an asst. coach for the Cougars JV team. That squad went 9-1 during the regular season, finished the season 2-0 in playoffs and won the JV HS Championship. Including pre-season tournaments and out of state tournaments this JV squad went 25-4.
